WHY A VISION BOARD WORKSHOP?

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

New Year’s resolutions just feel like pressure to me, so instead, I create an intention for my year around a word or phrase and a vision board.

Until last year, I didn’t spend much time thinking about my word throughout the year. My 2018 word was “Transformation.” When I decided on the word, I was clear it was what I wanted to create in my life in 2018.

At that time, I wasn’t happy. I felt like I was just coasting through life and like life was happening to me. I realized I was trying to control things outside of my control, all the while neglecting the things I could control. I felt stuck in the grief of my brother’s death. I felt stuck in a job that, while I loved my coworkers and our patients, was very stressful and out of alignment with my purpose and what I really wanted to be doing with my life. I can remember getting ready for work some mornings thinking, I can’t wait for the day to be over. I was wishing my life away. I was stuck, and I wanted change.

I knew that to create change in my life, I had to change. I knew that change would require effort, and up to that point, I wasn’t willing to put forth the effort. The discomfort of living in my comfort zone, the stirring to create something different for myself, and the nudges from God that there was more to life than this didn’t outweigh the things I told myself about how much energy and effort it would require to create change.

I was tired. All. The. Time. I didn’t think I had the energy or motivation in me to do it. But I started to think about it more and more… the idea of what I wanted my life to be… fulfilling, purposeful, fun, drama-free, less stress, less busyness, more meaningful connection with others, etc. I started getting clear about the things I wanted to transform in my life. The more I thought about the life I wanted and how blessed I was, the more I gained energy to take some small steps that I felt like would create a more fulfilling and purposeful experience.

So, on New Year’s Day 2018, I picked my word and I made a vision board. I really thought about where I wanted to be emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and physically. I felt that picking a theme word and making the vision board were fun and easy first steps to create some intention and focus on who I wanted to be, what I wanted to do, and what I wanted to have in my life.

After I spent hours creating the board, I folded it up and didn’t look at it again. Let’s be honest: they usually don’t look so good sitting out in the house. Not to mention, they’re like half a science project board size (I created the stretched canvas vision board in the picture at the top of this page in 2017, and I have had it hanging on a wall). So yeah, I put the tri-fold board in the closet. I looked at it twice the entire year.

But both times I looked at it were powerful. The first time, I was remodeling my house, which was on my board, and I came across the board at the exact time I was trying to decide the layout for my new kitchen cabinets. I opened the board and saw the picture of a kitchen I’d put on there six months before, and when I saw it, I got the idea of how I was going to lay out my kitchen. I went with the idea, and I love how it turned out! It’s crazy how closely it resembles the picture on my board.

The second time I looked at it was a couple of weeks ago, which meant it was just short of a year after I made it. I couldn’t believe how much on it I’d accomplished. I really was surprised. My tendency is to think more about what I haven’t accomplished instead of what I have, so it was crazy to look at it and see in front of me how much of what was on the board was now in my life.

Creating the vision board was a fun first step. By taking it, I kept finding the energy to take more steps in the direction I wanted to go. While I’ve made progress, life is still kicking my butt sometimes, and there’s still so much progress to make. So I’m carrying the theme word into this new year, and I’m making another vision board.

This year’s theme phrase is “Purposeful Action.” What’s more purposeful action than creating an opportunity to get together with others to set in motion what our New Year will look like!

Would you like to join me in setting our intention for the year by creating a theme word or phrase and a vision board? I’d love to experience creating my 2019 board with you.
